Fodor's Expert Review Le Parker Meridien

119 W. 56th St., between 6th and 7th Aves., New York, New York, 10019, USA See on Map

Combining the comforts of a dependable large hotel with whimsical elements, this property keeps visitors coming back with its long list of amenities including legendary patty-palace Burger Joint (hidden behind a velvet curtain in the lobby), a swimming pool with Central Park views, and a 20,000-square-foot gym with blow-dry bar and mani/pedi spa.

Functional rooms have low platform beds and TVs hidden in recessed, cherry-paneled cabinets. All rooms are over 300-square feet, with a spacious work desk and ergonomic chair. Complimentary overnight shoeshine is a nice extra if you're someone who needs their shoes shined.

When booking a room, specifically ask for a Central Park view or city skyline view, depending on your preference. But, if you don't get one, don't worry--the regular rooms are also very nice.

Rooms have shower/tub combos while suites have big walk-in showers and some with separate soaking tubs.

An open space with high ceilings, the lobby here has marble floors and wood-paneled walls. It’s a large space, but with over 700 rooms in the hotel (and popular restaurants on-site) it can be quite busy.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The lobby is a popular public space and can get very crowded at times (with guests, non-guests, and people waiting in line for Burger Joint).

Flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Central Park, the pool here is one of the most striking in New York City. It has an outdoor deck for sunbathing along with a food and drink menu.

Norma’s serves its famous $1,000 omelet, along with other more cost-effective items, in a bright space where breakfast is on offer until 3pm daily. Located behind a velvet curtain in the lobby, Burger Joint is a no-frills restaurant that consistently draws lines for its burgers and fries. They do not have a $1,000 burger. Knave is the spot for coffee, cocktails, and snacks while Indian Accent serves modern Indian fare for lunch and dinner. None of the coffee drinks or cocktails or snacks are $1,000, it's just the one omelet at the one restaurant.

Getting Around

Located a few blocks south of Central Park, this hotel is set in a bustling section of Midtown Manhattan. The theater district is nearby, along with several museums and shopping on Fifth Avenue. Subway access is varied, with several train lines (F, N, Q, R, W, E, B, and D trains) within a few blocks walk. Taxis and Uber are available in the neighborhood, but traffic congestion can be a problem--because New York City.

A modern steakhouse with a dimly lit bar, Quality Italian (3-minute walk) is the place to splurge on dry aged steaks and Berkshire pork chops. Downtown darling David Chang is behind Má Pêche (4-minute walk), his Midtown restaurant serving fried oyster buns and Sichuan glazed short ribs. The Midtown outpost of a Chinatown favorite, Joe’s Shanghai (3-minute walk) is an unfussy, affordable place to feast on soup dumplings.

One of Midtown’s most elegant bars is found at The Modern (7-minute walk) overlooking the sculpture garden in the Museum of Modern Art. In a neighborhood full of generic sports bars, Tanner Smith’s (4-minute walk) is a Prohibition-themed cocktail bar with leather banquettes and exposed brick walls.

Swimming high above the skyline in a pool overlooking Central Park is reason alone to a book a stay. A long list of amenities is attractive, from the blow dry bar to the mani/pedi spa. We love the variety of high/low dining options and the stellar Central Park views. Also, this hotel serves an omelet that costs $1,000. Let's not forget that.
