Fodor's Expert Review La Quinta Inn Manhattan
17 W. 32nd St., between 5th Ave. and Broadway, New York, New York 10001, USA See on Map
Smack in the middle of Koreatown and close to Penn Station, this budget-friendly hotel in a cheerful old Beaux Arts building may be one of the best deals in town. The hotel's prime feature is Vu Bar, located on the 14th floor. In the evening, guests and locals head up to this year-round mellow rooftop bar for a cocktail in the shadow of the Empire State Building.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The street immediately outside this hotel is a very busy and often crowded block, with streams of people going in and out of the nearby major subway station.
room
Basic rooms are decorated in neutral tones and have good functional features including a work desk and ergonomic chair, plus a coffeemaker--but expect a real "this is a hotel room" kind of vibe.
Guests seeking extra value will appreciate the free continental-style breakfast including cereals, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, bagels, and coffee.
bathroom
Simple bathrooms have white tile, clean showers, and sinks without much storage space.
lobby
The modern and sleek lobby has long, low couches plus a fireplace and a small front desk. There is room to relax, but most guests prefer to kick back in the rooftop bar instead.
drinking
Vu Bar, located on the 14th floor rooftop, has both indoor and outdoor space and serves simple bar snacks like pita chips and hummus or flatbread pizza alongside affordable beer, wine, and cocktails. The rooftop has a daily happy hour, which is amazing because that is a rarity in NYC. Right on, La Quinta.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Located on 32nd Street between Broadway and 5th Avenue, this hotel is practically right on top of a major subway station, the 34th Street/Herald Square stop with access to the B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, and W trains (plus the PATH train to New Jersey). Landmarks in Midtown and NoMad are within easy walking distance. Taxis and Uber are widely available in the neighborhood.
Restaurants
For a modern restaurant in Koreatown, follow the hungry crowds to Her Name is Han (4-minute walk); try the seafood stew. In a city full of Neapolitan-style pizzerias, Marta (7-minute walk) is a refreshing departure with its cracker-thin Roman-style pizzas. Aim for a seat at the bar to catch a glimpse of the pizzas being made. The flavors of India are served in a sleek industrial-inspired setting at Pondicheri (7-minute walk); order the thalis, or traditional sampler platters.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Affordability in New York City often equals far away locations and a short list of amenities. But this hotel is conveniently located for exploring several Manhattan neighborhoods and has one of New York’s most consistently affordable rooms plus an unfussy rooftop bar--with a happy hour.
