Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Americano

518 W. 27th St., between 10th and 11th Aves., New York, New York 10001, USA See on Map

Overlooking the High Line Park, this boutique property mirrors the artistic and stylish spirit of Chelsea. The fashionable neighborhood is full of galleries and unique shops, and the perfectly coiffed staff members can point you towards the best of the area. The rooftop bar and plunge pool are very popular places, and are frequented by (stylishly intimidating) locals.

If you're not in the mood for a stroll through Chelsea, ask to use a free guest bike to cycle the streets instead.

Funky yet comfortable rooms have low-platform beds, black vinyl beanbag chairs, and vintage accents like touch-tone phones. Comfort is in the details: soft denim robes and iPads loaded with music. Even room service manages to be stylish—meals arrive in bento boxes.

A few rooms have fireplaces—ask about them if you’re staying during the winter months.

Stocked with Aesop toiletries, bathrooms are sharp and functional with small sinks and grey tile.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Bathrooms lack privacy, with showers that are exposed to the room’s living space.

The minimal lobby has a residential feel with a couch and a few chairs across from a small check-in desk. There's really not much to see here. The main lobby space leads into the restaurant and coffee shop, which are both much more interesting.

A lobby coffee shop supplies convenient on-the-go snacks and, obviously, coffee drinks. The ground floor restaurant is French with a Latin accent (interesting); outdoor patio seating is lovely during the warm months. There’s also a rooftop tapas restaurant, which is fun.

Getting Around

Chelsea is a quiet, Downtown neighborhood that is best explored on foot. This hotel is set on 27th Street between 10th and 11th Avenue; the far west location isn’t the most convenient for public transportation. The nearest subway options are the C train at 23rd Street or 1 train at 28th Street. Taxis and Uber are widely available in the area.

Spanish tapas and wine are served in a cozy space at El Quinto Pino (8-minute walk); it’s a perfect date-night spot. A short walk down 10th Avenue (or along the High Line) will bring you to Chelsea Market (15-minute walk), a diverse indoor market with everything from gelato to tacos to hummus. For exceptional pizza, take a seat at one of the communal tables in Co. (7-minute walk); try the brussels sprouts and bacon pizza.

Chelsea’s best cocktail parlor is a short block away from this hotel. Porchlight (3-minute walk) is a bar from restaurant king Danny Meyer; order the Creole Negroni. For a glass of wine, settle into the cozy Le Pif Chelsea (6-minute walk).

We love the individual spirit of this property, from the design-driven rooms to the comfy details like soft denim robes. The Chelsea location—near galleries, shops, and the High Line—is alone worth a stay. Lots of extras make this hotel even more appealing, from the free bike rentals to the little rooftop plunge pool to the excellent coffee shop in the lobby.
