Fodor's Expert Review Crosby Street Hotel
79 Crosby St., between Prince and Spring Sts., New York, New York 10012, USA See on Map Fodor's Choice
This whimsical boutique hotel is the first branch of a UK chain to open in the U.S. and has a colorful design, all handpicked by co-owner Kit Kemp. Each of the rooms is individually designed, with fun patterns and colors, big warehouse style windows, and a cozy, residential feel. The location is smack in the heart of the action in SoHo.
room
Cozy cushions provide a place to relax by the floor-to-ceiling windows in the colorful, bright rooms. Design is playful and rooms are filled with sunlight. The high floors have windows with views over the rooftops of SoHo, and those rooms are particularly special for this reason.
The Meadow Suite has a private terrace for guests seeking outdoor space.
bathroom
Luxurious bathrooms in marble and granite have glass walk-in showers--upgrade for a deep soaking tub. Seriously, this place is relaxing.
lobby
A somewhat small check-in space is supplemented by comfortable, colorful drawing rooms that are reserved for guests only. In addition to the couches that fill these rooms, extra relaxation space is provided with the guest-only sculpture garden. You have so many chances to relax in this hotel that it's almost overwhelming (but it's not, because it's too relaxing).
dining
The Crosby Bar, with oak floors and a long, pewter bar, has a fun cocktail program and outdoor garden. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, and cocktails are all served.
YOU SHOULD KNOW This hotel lacks a destination restaurant, which is fairly common in upscale New York hotels.
LOCATION
Getting Around
From the stylish SoHo block where this hotel sits, exploring downtown on foot is easy. All of the shops and restaurants of SoHo are on the hotel’s doorstep, and the neighborhoods of Nolita, NoHo, and Greenwich Village are all within walking distance. Several options are available for subway access, including the B, D, F, and M trains at Broadway/Lafayette, the 6 train at Spring Street, and R, W trains at Prince Street.
Restaurants
One bonus of staying here is beating the crowds to Balthazar (2-minute walk). This French brasserie is popular all-day long, and is a place to rub elbows with New Yorkers over an early morning coffee and pastry. Pizzas, meat, and fish are all prepared in a wood-fired oven at Pasquale Jones (4-minute walk), an Italian restaurant that has earned a reputation for its wine list. For an affordable meal in an often expensive neighborhood, order a range of tacos at Tacombi Fonda Nolita (6-minute walk).
WHY WE LIKE IT
An original property with a whimsical design, this hotel fits with its neighborhood: SoHo is known for style and the Crosby Street Hotel lives up to that expectation. Beyond the style, service is impeccable and guests have access to peaceful spaces that are reserved for guests only. Get ready to relax.
