Kingston

Kingston has come a long way since its role as the state's first capital way back in 1777; while the historic Stockade District (also known as "Uptown Kingston") still showcases the gorgeous stone houses that were built after the British set the town afire during the American Revolution, a bevy of high-quality restaurants has opened in recent years, giving foodies a reason to travel here too. The intersection of Crown and John streets is the only one in the United States with 18th-century stone houses occupying all four corners while a culinary scene is also blossoming in the picturesque Rondout District that hugs Rondout Creek as it joins the Hudson River. This waterfront area, which has seen extensive gentrification since the 1980s, also has a lively arts scene. River cruises embark from the pier at the foot of Broadway.
