Train Travel

Amtrak's Southwest Chief, from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City, stops in Las Vegas, Lamy (near Santa Fe), and Albuquerque.

The state's commuter train line, the New Mexico Rail Runner Express, runs from Santa Fe south through Bernalillo and into the city of Albuquerque, continuing south through Los Lunas to the suburb of Belén, covering a distance of about 100 miles and stopping at 15 stations. The Rail Runner offers a very inexpensive and scenic alternative to getting to and from the Albuquerque airport to Santa Fe (shuttle buses run from the airport to the Rail Runner stop in Downtown Albuquerque).

The New Mexico Rail Runner Express runs numerous times on weekdays from early morning until late evening, and less often on weekends. Tickets cost $2 to $10 one-way, depending on the distance traveled; day passes are available (and will save you money on round-trip journeys).
