Why We Like It
Under the skillful guidance of the owners of Ojo Caliente, this serene high-desert oasis has blossomed into one of the most inviting spa getaways in the Southwest. The grounds are secluded and beautiful, the spa outstanding, and the soaking tubs utterly blissful—and there's a first-rate restaurant. It's a bit far from most of Santa Fe's attractions, including the historic Plaza, but part of the appeal of staying at this resort is tuning out (there are no in-room TVs, for example) and rebalancing your energy.

After having closed for a few years, this serene and scenic spa resort on the far south side of Santa Fe reopened in 2016 following a hugely ambitious revamp under the guidance of new ownership, the same team behind the famed Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs resort about an hour north of here. Set on 70 acres of gardens, shade trees, and meadows laced by paths and trails, the resort contains attractive rooms and casitas, an excellent farm-to-table restaurant, and what's quickly become known as one of the best spa in the Southwest. You'll find a number of additional opportunities here for both relaxation and enrichment, including yoga and fitness studios, culinary and gardening glasses, expressive arts workshops, private outdoor ojitos (soaking tubs), a sweat lodge, and a seasonal heated swimming pool.
Tip Are you an animal lover? You can't bring your own pet to Sunrise Springs, but the resort offers an unusual interactive animal experience. Guests can play with and learn about golden retriever puppies through a program the resort participates in to train and raise service dogs. Guests can also sign up to engage with the Silkie chickens the resort raises—activities range from simply watching the birds to feeding and holding them.

Room
The resort has two main types of accommodations: 20 luxurious casitas with private courtyards, gas fireplaces, and separate outdoor entrances, and 32 conventional rooms set in two adjacent buildings and with views of a sacred Medicine Wheel lawn. They're furnished in a clean and contemporary style with minimal clutter but lovely Southwest-print blankets and throws provide both color and personality. All come with fluffy personal robes, and they have small refrigerators and, on request, microwaves.
Bathroom
Bathrooms have attractive white-tile showers and Saltillo-tile floors, stone counters, and high-end towels. The resort's own custom bath products are produced with local plants and herbs.
Lobby
The resort has an attractive reception area, but it's primarily just a place to check-in and get acquainted with the facilities. Most lounging and relaxation takes place in the airy Moon House Lounge, which has a patio overlooking a tranquil pond, or in the spa, restaurant, or classrooms, or outside amid the grounds, which offer countless areas to sit and enjoy nature.
Pool
A large saltwater outdoor pool (open April–October) and adjacent year-round hot tub are fringed by a large patio with both covered cabana-style seating and uncovered lounge chairs.
Spa
Overlooking a tranquil spring-fed pond, the beautiful spa at Sunrise Springs is focused on wellness and restorative therapies. You can enjoy a number of add-on experiences with any treatment, from reflexology to cranial sacral and polarity therapies. Hot stone and East Indian–inspired Ancient Echoes are among the most popular massage options, and there's a slew of skin-care treatments available. The spa uses Round Barn Apothecary products developed at Ojo Caliente.
Tip Plan to add some time soaking in one of the private ojitos before or after your spa treatments. These mineral-infused soaking tubs overlook the spring-fed pond, and guests typically combine a soak with time in the eucalyptus steam shower.
Gym
The resort has a large, well-outfitted fitness studio with top-of-the-line equipment, and yoga, cardio, strength training, and other classes are offered, along with full fitness evaluations.
Dining
Popular both with resort guests and others in the community, Blue Heron Restaurant overlooks the resort's pond and serves three meals daily as well as a terrific Sunday brunch. The menu focused on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and might feature banana pancakes with local honey in the morning, and quinoa cakes with summer vegetables and cashew cream, or crab croquettes with goat cheese ravioli in the evening.
Drinking
A casually stylish spot to relax with a glass of wine, the Moon House Lounge is anchored by a central fireplace and has a large deck overlooking the resort's pond.
What's Nearby
Getting Around
The resort is set in a somewhat rural residential neighborhood on the far south side of Santa Fe, about a 25- to 30-minute drive from the Plaza, although close to Interstate 25 and the scenic Turquoise Trail. You need a car in this part of town both to get to local attractions and restaurants and to explore farther afield, although if you're planning to spend most of your time at the resort, you could get by with occasional Uber or taxi rides elsewhere.
Restaurants
Part of the fun of dining at the quirky San Marcos Cafe & Feed Store (15-minute drive), which is open just for breakfast and lunch, is watching the turkeys and peacocks march around the grounds outside. In the cozy dining room, you can savor delicious huevos rancheros, green-chile stew, and other local treats. Dr. Field Goods Kitchen (20-minute drive) serves creative, eclectic farm-to-table fare, including red-buffalo enchiladas and decadent bacon-patty BLTs.
Bars
The resort is relatively close to the lively main headquarters of Santa Fe Brewing Company (10-minute drive), a fun spot to sample outstanding local IPAs and stouts. Known for first-rate barbecue, the Ranch House (15-minute drive) is also a great option for cocktails and conversation, especially during popular happy hours, held daily 4 to 6 pm.
Head to Duel Brewing (5-minute drive) for fine-crafted, Belgian-style farmhouse ales and terrific sandwiches and other bar food, too.
