Bus

Greyhound has buses to Boston from all major cities in North America. Besides its main location at South Station, there are also suburban terminals in Newton and Framingham. Peter Pan Bus Lines connects Boston with cities elsewhere in Southern New England, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland.

Concord Coach runs buses between Boston and several cities in New Hampshire and Maine. C&J sends buses up the New Hampshire coast to Newburyport, Massachusetts; Dover, New Hampshire; Durham, New Hampshire; and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Concord and C&J both leave from South Station (which is connected to the Amtrak station) and Logan Airport. BoltBus offers cheap fares in well-kept buses between Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. (express service between Boston and New York City is also available). Megabus also offers low fares, and serves New York City and points south along the East Coast. Both companies leave from South Station.

Getting Around By Bus

Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) buses crisscross the metropolitan area and travel farther into suburbia than the subway and trolley lines. Most bus routes run from 5:30 am to 12:30 am.

One-way fares within the city are $2 if paying in cash, or $1.70 if paying with a prepurchased CharlieCard (; fares are higher for longer suburban lines. Fare machines accept paper currency but do not return change.
