Grantsville

Two miles south of the Mason-Dixon Line, Grantsville is a tiny village (population about 600) that was incorporated in 1864. It's nestled amid some of the most productive farmland in the region—no surprise as this is the heart of the county's Amish and Mennonite farming communities. To the west and south is Maryland's largest forest, the 53,000-acre Savage River State Forest. Mostly undeveloped, it's used by hikers, campers, anglers, and, in winter, cross-country skiers. Also nearby is New Germany State Park, which has hiking trails, campsites, and cabins.
