Rangeley Lakes Trails Center. A largely wooded, 34-mile trail network stretches along lower Saddleback Mountain and leads to Saddleback Lake. In winter, trails are groomed (double- and single-track) for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat-tire biking. A yurt lodge has ski, snowshoe, and fat-tire rentals and a snack bar known for tasty soups. Call ahead for ski, snowshoe, and fat-tire tours and cross-country lessons. In warmer weather, the trails are popular with mountain bikers, hikers, and runners. 524 Saddleback Mountain Rd., Dallas, Maine, 04970. 207/864–4309; www.rangeleylakestrailscenter.org. From $10.

Saddleback Mountain. Shuttered in 2015 and sold in January 2020, new owners installed what the previous ones had pined for—a high-speed quad lift. The beginner ski area is one of New England's best, partly because it is below the base lodge. At the other end of the spectrum, it's black diamonds all the way down at Kennebago Steeps!, touted as the East's largest steep-skiing area. Saddleback also has extensive glade areas, three terrain parks, and lots of natural snow. A fieldstone fireplace keeps things warm in the post-and-beam base lodge, which has a second-story pub. Recent renovations greatly expanded capacity and views. On-mountain lodging choices include ski-in, ski-out homes and trailside condos. The resort plans to ramp up summertime with activities such as mountain biking, kayaking, maple syruping, and guided hikes. Facilities: 66 trails; 220 acres; 2,000-foot vertical drop; 5 lifts. 976 Saddleback Mountain Rd., Dallas, Maine, 04970. 207/864–5671; 866/918–2225; www.saddlebackmaine.com.
