Sebago Lake Area

Seasonal and year-round dwellings, from simple camps to sprawling showplaces, line the shores of sprawling Sebago Lake and fingerlike Long Lake. Both are popular with water-sports enthusiasts, as is Brandy Pond and many other bodies of water in the area. Several rivers flow into Sebago Lake—Maine's second largest—linking nearby lakes and ponds to form a 43-mile waterway. Naples, on the causeway separating Long Lake from Brandy Pond, pulses with activity in the summer, when the area swells with seasonal residents and weekend visitors. Open-air cafés overflow with patrons, boats buzz along the water, and families parade along the sidewalk edging Long Lake. On clear days the view includes snowcapped Mt. Washington. The nonextant Cumberland and Oxford Canal was part of a water route from Long Lake to Portland in the mid-1800s. At Sebago Lake State Park, the one remaining canal lock operates on the Songo River, which connects Brandy Pond and Sebago Lake.
