Fodor's Expert Review The Danforth

163 Danforth St., Portland, Maine, 04102, USA Fodor's Choice

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

A stunning showpiece, this stylish inn was one of Portland's grandest Federal-style dwellings when it was built in 1823 on a block known as "Social Corners" for the elaborate parties its owners held in their spacious parlor, and it's located right next to historic Victoria Mansion. Updated with contemporary furnishings and Southeast Asian accents, the inn has a mod, seaside feel, while the guest rooms, which have original, working fireplaces, are individually decorated with vibrant patterns and artwork giving each a unique character of its own.

PROS

  • gorgeous rooms
  • basement billiards room
  • city views from cupola

CONS

  • small windows in some third-floor rooms
