Fodor's Expert Review Melrose Mansion

937 Esplanade Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana 70116, USA See on Map

Cameron Todd

Spacious rooms, pleasant outdoor spaces, and one of the largest pools in the city, this converted Victorian mansion on Esplanade Avenue provides a unique and comfortable stay.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Stay alert at night: like many areas in the city, while beautiful and historic, this area of Esplanade and Rampart can attract some petty foot crime.

The 21 rooms within the mansion and guest house vary in size, but soaring ceilings mean that even the standard room feels large, and all have authentic touches like canopied beds, fireplaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Suites have full living rooms and kitchens. Simple but modern decor throughout the hotel make accommodations feel spacious and clean.

Napoleon rooms on the first floor are a great value, available within the $100-150 range, prices going up higher for suite packages and the grand balcony room overlooking Esplanade.

Bathrooms are recently renovated, with spacious showers, large sinks, lots of marble and mirrors, and jacuzzis in some suites.

The lobby is an airy foyer connected to a formal parlor, with modern art and the hotel’s signature photographs of local musicians covering the walls.

The pool takes up most of the courtyard, with vine-covered stone walls providing some privacy from neighbors and the foot traffic of Esplanade. There are small tables and chairs surrounding the water, and more pool-facing seating and lounging on the porch deck and upper balconies of the mansion and guest house.

The top floor of the main house is converted into an impressively complete gym. Attached is a small, sunny yoga room with great views of the city.

A dining room off of the pool serves hot breakfast and coffee.

The hotel hosts a poolside wine and cheese happy hour each day.

Getting Around

It’s a pleasure to stroll on Esplanade, either toward the river down to the Marigny and the Quarter, or up toward Bayou St. John to marvel at the other grand mansions of this verdant street. The new streetcar on Rampart St. is steps away, and it’s easy to catch an uber or taxi at this fairly busy intersection. There is limited parking in the back of the hotel.

Your dining time is best spent within the Marigny, with restaurants full of character and flavor. Horn's (5-minute walk) is excellent for brunch, as well as the local favorite The Ruby Slipper Cafe (5-minute walk). For dinner, make a reservation for music and excellent small plates at Three Muses (7-minute walk).

Buffa’s (1-minute walk) is colorful, fun and open late, and Port of Call (2-minute walk) is a favorite among tourists throughout the day and night. Rub shoulders over cheap beer and fried green beans with the locals at Cosimo’s (3-minute walk).

First a single family home in the 1880s, later a brothel and then a boarding house, Melrose Mansion is a piece of New Orleans history, while still providing the most important of comforts: beautiful bedrooms, huge renovated bathrooms, and a seriously pleasant pool and courtyard. We love how staying on this wide, tree-lined section of Esplanade has so much magic. You can enjoy a quiet cocktail in the parlor while staying right on the edge of the Marigny action, likely to catch costume-clad locals and a steady stream of music any time of the year.
