Fodor's Expert Review Sun Valley Lodge

1 Sun Valley Rd., Sun Valley, Idaho, 83353, USA

In the charming, Austrian-style Sun Valley Village, this behemoth lodge was built in 1936 and maintains the elegance and splendor of the original ski culture. Photos of 1950s glitterati, including Marylin Monroe and Clark Gable, line the decadent halls, where you can catch sightings of 21st-century celebrities as well. The Duchin Room piano bar has regular live jazz, with an outdoor terrace and year-round ice rink down the steps. A downstairs bowling alley and game room, village toy store, and hot cocoa bar make it a favorite for kids as well.

PROS

  • lots of on-site activities
  • good choice of room types

CONS

  • not very lively outside the main ski season
  • not all rooms have a good view
