Why We Like It

This beautiful property has incredibly stunning manicured yet wild grounds and views and feels like a real luxury getaway. It’s posh without being pretentious, and the hosts are warm and make an excellent breakfast.

Fodor's Expert Review

Six spacious rooms and suites—plus a private, vintage, one-bedroom cottage that's perfect for honeymooners—are available at this beautiful cedar home on a 30-acre coffee-country estate, a few miles above Kailua Bay in the heart of the artists' village of Holualoa. Nicely appointed with Asian furnishings and fine local art, the inn offers "garden-to-plate" gourmet breakfasts including Kona coffee grown on the property, fresh fruits, jams, eggs from the inn's coop, quiches, French toast, and macadamia-nut butter. On-site are rooftop gazebos, a mosaic-tile swimming pool, hot tub, fireplace, guest kitchenette with refrigerator and utensils, dedicated massage pavilion, beautifully manicured tropical gardens, and a meandering coffee trail through archeological sites. The inn offers an open-air pavilion for weddings and retreats.

Tip Your hosts provide a wonderful flora and fauna guide so that you can explore the grounds of this 30-acre property covered in tropical fruit and flowers. Be sure to take advantage of it and taste some of Hawaii’s amazing tropical fruit straight from the tree.

Room

At Holualoa Inn guests can choose from six rooms, a cottage, and the Red Barn, depending on view preferences and group size. The inn and rooms are decorated with Polynesian design throughout, and rooms and suites range from light and airy to dark and warm in their décor. All of them have incredibly comfortable beds with down comforters and pillows and beautifully restored eucalyptus floors throughout. Garden, ocean, and pool views are available depending on the room.

You Should Know The walls in this inn are pretty thin, and you’re likely to hear some of your fellow guests, especially if anyone is above you. Plan ahead and ask for the quietest rooms and bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper.

Bathroom

Each room has a private bath with walk-in shower or tub/shower, all of which are decadently designed and chicly decorated.

Pool

Coffee Cherry Room has a private hot tub.

Dining

Though there is no on-site restaurant, daily breakfast and special snacks are provided. There is also a nice kitchen and BBQ for guests to use.

Getting Around

You will need a car to get to the inn and to get around the island.

Restaurants

Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe (3-minute walk) is a slow food restaurant that sources lots of its ingredients locally (most within five miles of the restaurant) and changes its menu regularly based on the season and available ingredients. Rays on the Bay (16-minute drive) has tranquil ocean views, lovingly crafted local dishes from the land, ocean, and gardens, and a really incredible ahi poke stack that makes for a perfect start to your meal.

Bars

With lava flow and mai tai flights (they have 10 different kinds), there’s plenty to love at Don’s Mai Tai Bar (14-minute drive). Thursday nights are particularly fun as they host a weekly Hawaiian music series. The Big Island’s newest brewery, community-owned Ola Brewery (16-minute drive), offers brewery tours and tastes. Be sure to try the White Pineapple Cider!
