Why We Like It

You know that relaxed, centered feeling you get when you spend the day at a top-rated spa? That is how you’ll feel when you visit Largo Resort. Every nuance, every vibrant leaf and petal works in harmony to create this level of tranquility. You will feel it as soon as you arrive. Sure, you can rent the entire compound and turn it into a mini party palace of sorts. There is even power and audio at the private dock to help you achieve such goals. But when the fun dies down, you’ll still wake up in a peaceful, private, recharge-your-batteries kind of paradise. Hop in a kayak, explore the bay, refresh with a dip in the pool, and get ready for one gorgeous sunset. You'll not only have a front row seat, it will feel like it's setting just for you--and it is.

Fodor's Expert Review

Even locals don’t realize this place exists. All anyone can see is an entry way with Balinese statues and a 10’ tall, solid dark wood gate (think Jurassic Park on a smaller scale). Once the gates open, a tropical pathway to great potential is revealed. From here, it’s what you make it.

You Should Know This is not your typical resort or hotel with an abundance of amenities. It is a private compound, and playground, for those in the know and those who can afford it. You do get daily maid service and there is a full-time caretaker and concierge available to you.

Room

Six detached suites (small homes) create Bungalow Row. Each bungalow has a king bedroom, a hidden Murphy bed, 1.5 baths, and 800-sq-ft of serene eclecticism with German fixtures and dark Balinese handcrafted furniture. The Grand Lodge is beyond exceptional with over-the-top features, luxurious bathrooms, and a Mahogany tree growing through the ceiling.

Tip Limited funds? There is still hope. They offer seasonal specials on bungalows (with minimum stay requirements) but it’s actually close to affordable.

Bathroom

Stunning, really. Glass enclosed showers, custom vanities with artistic, vessel sinks and marble tops, plush towels, and Neutrogena and Nexxus toiletry items. And these are just the bungalow bathrooms.

You Should Know Baths have either a louvered or frosted glass door, and may not provide the privacy you require if you’re the shy type.

Lobby

There is no central lobby. Once you enter the property gates, staff will greet you in the parking area.

Pool

Wade right in to this lagoon-style Infinity pool with coral boulders and eye-catching tile. Its freeform shape, bay views, and lush surroundings are dazzling but the therapeutic massaging jets provide maximum relaxation. It’s kept incredibly clean not by chemical overload, but by ultraviolet light. Natural coral decking is remarkable; Balinese chaise loungers with thick cushions are nap-inducing.

You Should Know There is no poolside service. You are on your own for your poolside needs.

Spa

No onsite spa but your concierge can make arrangements for a masseuse to come to you.

Gym

No onsite gym, but your concierge can recommend a local facility.

Dining

No onsite dining in the form of restaurants, but if you rent The Grand Lodge with its professional kitchen (or the entire compound), you can bring a chef or hire a local one to prepare your meals.

Drinking

No onsite bars. If you rent the entire compound, there is a small bar area in The Grand Lodge called Moe's Bar, and they'll be happy to stock it for you.

Grounds

Lush with palms, native trees, and flowering plants, the property is like one big spa relaxation room! We love the Balinese influence throughout--the gazebos, lanterns, elephant statues, and many other imported treasures. The private beach is nicer than most in the Keys as they bring in the soft sand from Florida’s west coast. A 15’ deep lagoon is right off shore.

Activities

Kayaks and paddle boards are included in your stay--just grab one and go. There is a 21’ motor boat and a 42” sailboat available for rental.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

If you want to escape the quietude of your compound, you’ll either need to drive yourself or call for an Uber or taxi. You can walk to a few places, like Dolphins Plus, just be aware that US1 is super busy.

Restaurants

Sol by the Sea (8-minute drive) at the Playa Largo Resort is open for lunch and offers a Caribbean-inspired menu with fresh fish and bay views. Shipwrecks Bar & Grill (8-minute drive) is a very casual locals spot, famous for their all-you-can-eat Friday fish fry (or blackened or grilled). It’s also good any other day. Sundowners (8-minute drive) is an upscale dining establishment open for lunch and dinner.

Bars

The Caribbean Club (3-minute drive) is legendary. This is where Humphrey Bogart filmed Key Largo with Lauren Bacall. It’s a cash-only dive with no food but great sunset views. Jimmy Johnson’s Big Chill (3-minute drive) has two bars, an indoor sports bar, and an outdoor Tiki Bar with entertainment. Don’t miss their rosemary chicken wings.
