Fodor's Expert Review The Colony

155 Hammon Ave., Palm Beach, Florida, 33480, USA Fodor's Choice

This exuberant and undeniably charming British-colonial-style hotel has spacious suites, chic decor, and sits in a particularly convenient location, just one block from Worth Avenue and one block from a pretty beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel underwent a five-year, $18 million top-to-bottom renovation in 2015. Sky and ocean blues and greens and sunset corals from the natural scene outside its windows, along with a banana-leaf-and-tropical-bloom motif, were brought indoors by decorator Carleton Varney. The pool area has ornamental plants, fountains, furniture, and billowing white panels reminiscent of South Beach's grand art deco hotels. The pool itself is actually shaped like the state of Florida, although the panhandle is severely reduced in size. A signature Beach Buggy program shuttles guests to and from the ocean in a custom Palm Beach Pink buggy. An attentive staff, youthful yet experienced, is buzzing with competence and a desire to please. Spacious suites have sleeper sofas, and luxurious two-bedroom villas have laundry facilities and full kitchens. Reserve early for the in-house dinner cabaret shows in the popular, jazzy restaurant, which boasts featured entertainers such as Copeland Davis and Lenny Zinni. The bar is superpopular with locals during the early evening hours.
