The Maven Hotel

1850 Wazee St., Denver, Colorado 80202, USA

Why We Like It

The Maven combines hotel creature comforts with trendy decor, fantastic art, and a truly unique experience. Perfect for a younger set or families, they’re putting the fun into this funky downtown property. The varying retail, dining, and entertainment spaces open in the remaining part of the surrounding Dairy Block will only up the ante.

Fodor's Expert Review

This independent hotel feels very new in both the contemporary sense and the aged sense. Located in the Lower Downtown Historic District, the oldest building in the district (1871) is across the street from the newest (2017). The space anchors the new Dairy Block, a mixed-use development combining new and old construction and an activated alleyway. During baseball season, the streets are flooded with fans walking to Coors Field, the downtown home of the Colorado Rockies.

You Should Know A $20 per day destination amenity fee is added to each room and covers high-speed WiFi, free in-room water bottles, a daily coffee at Airstream, and a beer or margarita at the Airstream during happy hour, plus it gives a 10% discount on spa services at The Oxford, 15% discount on food and non-alcoholic drink at Kachina Southwestern Grill, and a 25% discount at several Union Station vendors.

Room

The 172 boutique rooms are intended to feel like lofts, with an emphasis on natural light and punctuated by high, concrete ceilings. Rooms vary in size and amenities, with suites offering better views, wet bars, and mini fridges, but all rooms are styled in white linens and walls, with the punch of Persian turquoise carpeting and camel colored chairs and headboards. The unique bunk rooms will appeal to couples traveling together as well as families with late-elementary to high-school-aged kids. Each hipster haven also includes a pour over coffee system.

Bathroom

The bathrooms are big and the showers are magical. Folks who stay in hotels often know that bathrooms can be hit or miss, but these are palatial and only seem to grow larger with upgrades in rooms. Larger rooms add on oversized soaking tubs and bathrooms in suites are big enough to get lost in.

Lobby

The lobby invites interplay between indoor and outdoor space by extending into the activated alley behind the hotel, where entrances to hot, new eateries and destinations lie ahead. Massive art pieces, orange sofas, pinball machines, black leather chairs, and forgiving lighting hold the seemingly endless space together.

Spa

Guests are encouraged to book services at The Oxford Club, Spa & Salon, and receive a 10% discount on spa services and a 20% discount on retail products.

Gym

The fitness center is also impressive in size, with oodles of standard cardio, strength training equipment, free weights, and benches.

Dining

The fare at Kachina Southwestern Grill celebrates the Four Corners (that’s Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah). Think food that’s smoky, spicy, and sultry, with chiles and meats and mezcal and edible cactus all converging. If you’re not sure where to start, try the fry bread tacos, a house specialty that pays homage to Navajo cuisine.

Drinking

The cocktail program at Kachina is strong—both the menu and the drinks themselves! The hotel’s bar, Poka Lola Social Club, opens at 5 p.m. and has a throwback drink menu and retro-inspired decor.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The proximity to Union Station means you won’t need to rent a car, as getting to the Maven from the airport is easy. The neighborhood is the definition of walkable, with wide sidewalks and well-lit streets. There is a house car, willing to cart guests around anywhere within two miles, when available.

Restaurants

Beyond the restaurants inside Denver’s restored Union Station and the options at the all-new Dairy Block surrounding the hotel (opening throughout 2018), other nearby LoDo gems include the upscale Vesta (3-minute walk) and Avelina (3-minute walk). The oyster happy hour at Jax Fish House (3-minute walk) is a favorite among locals as are the tacos at Machete Tacos + Tequila (4-minute walk).

Bars

Play pinball, skee ball, and vintage arcade games at barcade The 1up (3-minute walk). To discover one of hundreds of beers from around the world (including more than 75 on tap), pay a visit to Falling Rock Tap House (3-minute walk). And, when in LoDo, enjoy the rooftop views from one of the many sports bars surrounding Coors Field, like Jackson’s Denver (5-minute walk).
