Taxes

Sales tax in the state of California is 7.25%, but local taxes vary and may be as much as an additional 2.5%. Sales tax applies to all purchases except for food bought in a grocery store; food consumed in a restaurant is taxed, but take-out food is not. Hotel taxes vary widely by region, from about 8% to 16.5%.
