Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Vertigo

940 Sutter St., San Francisco, California, 94109, USA

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Scenes in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Vertigo were shot in this ornate hotel (it was a speakeasy during Prohibition), and designer Thomas Schoos has infused the guest rooms with whimsical tributes—consider the tangerine highlights and the horse-head lamps, not to mention the classic Vertigo swirl logo along the walls. Amenities include business and fitness centers, along with a café. Although the hotel's block, west and south of Nob Hill proper, includes apartment buildings and cafés, the neighborhood has a scruffy side, so exercise caution when walking here.
