Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Union Square
114 Powell St., San Francisco, California, 94102, USA
Editor's Note: This location is reported to be under new ownership and therefore this review may contain inaccuracies.
The design-centric interiors of this hotel erected for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition evoke art-deco style but feel strictly contemporary with urban-modern furnishings, rain showers, and soundproof windows. The lobby echoes San Francisco's noir era, which is appropriate, as Maltese Falcon author Dashiell Hammett once lived here, as did his mistress, who's said to haunt one of the rooms. The daily wine hour in the lobby is often accompanied by live music.
