Fodor's Expert Review Hotel Bohème

444 Columbus Ave., San Francisco, California 94133, United States See on Map

Pretend you're a writer, or better yet, sip some tea and get started on that novel, in this small hotel in historic North Beach. Travel back in time to when Beat generation ruled this slice of San Francisco--Allen Ginsberg often stayed here (legend has it that in his later years he could be seen sitting in a window, typing away on his typewriter). Screenwriters toiling nearby at Francis Ford Coppola's dream factory, American Zoetrope, as well as sundry poets and artists, are frequent patrons.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There is no elevator and rooms are on the second and third floors.

room

Cast-iron beds, large mirrored armoires, and Beat-era memorabilia offer a historic feel. Additional perks include a sweet little bistro table and two chairs.

Rooms in the rear are a refuge from the noisy North beach nightlife, especially on weekends.

bathroom

Bathrooms have cheerful yellow tiles and tiny showers.

lobby

The small lobby might feel dark after a day of exploring. Bookshelves and a red centerpiece desk hark an era long gone, where simplicity was the norm.

dining

The hotel does not have an on-site restaurant, but there are plenty of nearby eateries like Restaurante Ideale (1-minute walk).

drinking

Complimentary sherry is served in the lobby nightly.

LOCATION

Getting Around

The central location of the hotel pleases walkers, who can easily access the Financial District, Embarcadero, Union Square, Chinatown and more. Parking is rough in North Beach, though there are a couple of pricey garages. Most travelers prefer to take advantage of public transportation. Bus lines stop right out front, connecting travelers with the BART and Muni station, and other neighborhoods.

Restaurants

The legendary Original Joe's (2-minute walk) slings outstanding Italian eats in a sweet ambiance. For a more casual affair, but no less delicious, head to Tony's Pizzeria Napoletana (2-minute walk) for some of the city's best pies.

Bars

Party-goers from around the Bay Area flock to North Beach for its nightlife. Sure there are plenty of strip clubs, but you'll also find craft cocktail bars like 15 Romolo (4-minute walk) and old-school Beat generation-era whiskey bars like Vesuvio (2-minute walk).

WHY WE LIKE IT

A fab location, a groovy setting, and an affordable price make this North Beach property a favorite for those looking for a comfy bed.
