Fodor's Expert Review Harbor Court Hotel
165 Steuart St., San Francisco, California 94105, United States See on Map
A friendly staff earns high marks for this cozy hotel, which overlooks the Embarcadero, and all sorts of nice touches enliven this pet-friendly property. Constructed in 1926 as a YMCA Army-Navy residence, designers have extracted the utilitarian style and have infused the hotel with dashes of color.
YOU SHOULD KNOW The hotel charges a daily "amenities fee" to cover the cost of Wi-Fi, bike use, morning coffee and tea service and the afternoon wine hour.
room
Tight guest quarters feature double sets of soundproof windows and brightly colored throw pillows adorning beds with 320-thread-count sheets. Sleek interiors, high tech amenities, and a small work desk please business travelers.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Spring for a bay view room, which overlooks the Bay Bridge.
lobby
Sweet sitting nooks dot the lobby area. Ask the staff about Wii and other games for guests to play on rainy days.
pool
For a small fee, guests can use the Olympic-sized lap pool at the YMCA next door.
spa
The hotel does not provide spa services, but the YMCA next door offers a steam room, sauna and Jacuzzi.
gym
For a fee, hotel guests can use the adjacent YMCA, which features fitness equipment, weights, classes, and an Olympic-sized lap pool.
dining
The hotel does not have an on-site restaurant, however, next door Ozumo serves fine sushi and Japanese favorites in an upscale dining room overlooking the bay.
LOCATION
Getting Around
The hotel offers valet parking with in and out privileges. Walkers will appreciate the bay trail right across the street, connecting travelers to the Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, China Basin, Mission Bay and even the Marina. Hop on the Muni or BART trains (just a block away) to connect to other neighborhoods like Union Square, the Mission, and even San Francisco and Oakland Airports.
Restaurants
Reserve a table outside, gazing at the bay at La Mar Cebicheria Peruana (9-minute walk) to enjoy outstanding ceviche, pulpo, and Lomo Saltado. Based on your location, you'll likely clock some serious hours exploring the Ferry Building (5-minute walk) where you can sample oysters, chocolate, the city's best burger (Prather Ranch) and excellent (though pricey) Mexican fare at Mijita.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Bay views, a fab location near the city's best food hall, and a friendly staff add up to make this former military bunkhouse a modern-day fave.
