Windsurfing

Also known as sailboarding, windsurfing is a sport best practiced on smooth waters, such as Mission Bay. More experienced windsurfers will enjoy taking a board out on the ocean. Wave jumping is especially popular at the Tourmaline Surfing Park, where you can also occasionally see kiteboarders practice their variation on the theme.

Mission Bay Aquatic Center. The world's largest instructional waterfront facility offers lessons in wakeboarding, sailing, surfing, waterskiing, rowing, kayaking, and windsurfing. Equipment rental is also available, but the emphasis is on instruction, and most rentals require a minimum two-hour orientation lesson before you can set out on your own. Reservations are recommended, particularly during the summer. Skippered keelboats and boats for waterskiing or wakeboarding can be hired with reservations. Free parking is available but keep an eye out for signage—not all the parking spots are free or overnight. 1001 Santa Clara Pl., Mission Beach, San Diego, California, 92109. 858/488–1000; www.mbaquaticcenter.com.
