Fodor's Expert Review The Pearl Hotel

1410 Rosecrans St., San Diego, California, 92106, USA

This 1960s Sportsman's Lodge received a mid-century modern makeover in 2007, turning it into a retro-chic hangout decorated with kitschy lamps and original, in-room photographs of pearl divers. Popular among young couples and solo business travelers, the hotel has guest rooms with only one bed, but they contain amenities like LCD flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. Nine of the 23 rooms have patios and rain showerheads, and the entire property underwent renovation in 2020. On Wednesday night, movies are projected on a screen behind the saltwater pool, where hammocks and strong cocktails attract trendy locals. Staffers have a friendly, enthusiastic vibe.

PROS

  • near marina
  • hip bar/restaurant on-site (dinner only, except for seasonal specials)
  • "Oysters and Bubbles" Mondays with $2 oysters and half-off bubbly

CONS

  • one bed in rooms
  • noise on movie night
