Fodor's Expert Review Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument

Jointly managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, this 280,000-acre desert habitat protects animals like Peninsular bighorn sheep and contains areas of geological, cultural, and scientific significance. You can access the backcountry from the Coachella Valley and the nearby alpine village of Idyllwild.
