Fodor's Expert Review Hyatt Regency Sonoma Wine Country

170 Railroad St., Santa Rosa, California 95401, USA See on Map

Relentlessly corporate but easy on the eyes and well maintained, this hotel wins points for its convenient downtown location, decent-size pool, courteous staff, and arbor-lined sculpture garden. As part of its late-2017 rebranding into a Hyatt Regency property, the former Hyatt Vineyard Creek Hotel and Spa received a multimillion-dollar renovation of all its existing rooms, jettisoning the spa in the process. Business services and executive suites attract the commercial crowd, and the pool, garden, and a courtyard with a large fire pit appeal to those folks and leisure travelers.

YOU SHOULD KNOW A separate new wing with 89 more rooms is set to debut by mid-2018 if not sooner.

Rooms are done in the Regency brand's tastefully muted gray and beige tones, with dark-brown and purple highlights. Uncluttered but loaded with amenities, the rooms have coffee makers, 65" flat-screen TVs, desks (in king-bed rooms) or tables (in rooms with two queens), safes, small refrigerators, iHome stereos with iPod docks, and comfortable Hyatt Grand beds with down comforters and headboards with built-in USB ports and electrical.

The several room categories range from 324-square-foot standard rooms with king beds to 700-square-foot suites, some of the latter with ground-floor patios.

Spanking-clean from the remodel, the bathrooms have showers or tub-shower combos, all with rich-gray ceramic tiles. The bathrooms are spacious but spare and have bright-white lighting for shaving or putting on make-up. Even the smallest bathrooms are roomy and have sufficient counter space.

Couples often book Executive King suites, which have large jetted whirlpool tubs, as do some of the Resort Suites.

A high vaulted ceiling and tall windows with views of a courtyard with a large crystal fire pit make for a suitably grand first impression in the Hyatt's broad lobby. Nods to the hotel's Wine Country locale include the rustic wood paneling on the front desk and bar, between which a display of decorative shovels hangs above the large interior fireplace.

The Roman-style heated outdoor pool, on the hotel's south side, receives sun all day long. Although the hum of nearby highway traffic can be heard, the pool area is a relaxing, secluded spot with views of the adjacent sculpture garden and arbors. Chairs and lounges are arranged around the pool, and there's a hot tub.

A brightly lit fitness center that looks out on a large outdoor courtyard contains Precor treadmills, ellipticals, and other machines, most with built-in TVs (headphones supplied). There are free weights, a multi-workout station, and other equipment as well. Towels and water are provided, and the space, whose windows can be opened to let in fresh air, is kept very clean.

Early each morning at the lobby bar, complimentary coffee and pastries are laid out. Breakfast, not included in the room rate, is served buffet style not too far away. A typical menu might include scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon, sausage, pastries, charcuterie, and seasonal fruit. You can also order room service, available from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The hotel's completely remodeled restaurant, which reopens in 2018 when the new wing does, will also have a lunch and dinner menu.

The full lobby bar opens at 4 p.m. You can enjoy a cocktail, beer, or wine in the lobby or the fire-pit courtyard, where you can order drinks at the bar's window.

Getting Around

Highway U.S. 101 skirts the Hyatt's southern edge, making it particularly easy to shoot up to Healdsburg area wineries and over to ones in western Sonoma County. The Santa Rosa Transit Mall, from which city and Sonoma County Transit buses depart, is a few blocks away. It's easy to walk to the Railroad Square Historic District from the hotel, though for points beyond, driving a car or using a ride-hailing service may work best.

For thick steaks and sustainable seafood in a clubby setting, head to Starks Steak & Seafood (8-minute walk). The Spinster Sisters (5-minute drive) serves shareable Modern American bites and small and large plates. Join Peruvian locals enjoying a taste of back home at Sazon Peruvian Cuisine (5-minute drive), a strip-mall restaurant whose name means "flavor" or "seasoning."

Good nearby watering holes include Jackson's Bar & Oven (5-minute walk) for expertly made cocktails you can sip while dining on pizzas, wings, and other comfort food, and the Russian River Brewing Company (4-minute drive) for "aggressively hopped California ales," barrel-aged beers, and the legendary Pliny the Elder. Locals swear by the margaritas and tequila tastings at La Rosa Tequileria & Grille (12-minute walk), if not always the Mexican cuisine (though it's not bad).

A dependable downtown option with a touch of class, the Hyatt Regency is convenient to Railroad Square dining and shopping, has easy freeway access, and its numerous places to relax and hang out include the pool, garden, and fire-pit courtyard. Online specials that show up sometimes even in summer can make this hotel a good value.
