This giant hotel in the middle of Marina del Rey has 370 rooms, a sweeping lobby, incredible views, and a stellar pool. Here, Silicon Beach business types flock to the bar after work and hole up with other corporate folks, and everybody makes good on their Marriott Rewards accounts. Big and a little impersonal, the hotel still provides great comfort in a particularly great area in the Marina.
Want to explore the Marina? Hop on the Free Ride shuttle that has a stop at the hotel. Just make sure you tip the driver.
Muted tones shouldn’t be surprising for Marriott customers, but if you ask for an upper floor, you’ll be treated to amazing vistas from the Juliet balconies. Each room is appointed with free coffee and tea as well as plush mattresses and ergonomic desk chairs.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Wi-Fi is free if you’re a Marriott Rewards member or if you want to do work in the lobby. Otherwise, you’re paying $12.95/day for web browsing or $15.95/day for streaming video. Shame on you, Marriott!
Marble bathrooms are fairly standardized and come with Thann products. Every bathroom has a shower/tub combo.
The massive lobby is where the action is in this hotel. High ceilings and marble floors lead the way to the large bar as well as a grab and go spot for coffee and snacks.
Marriott’s heated pool is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and has a full food and beverage program. There’s also a hot tub for the occasional chilly night. This isn’t a party scene, but a nice, chill place to lounge around.
Open 24/7, the fitness center has an array of Life Fitness machines: cardio, treadmills, etc. There are also free weights and complimentary apples and water.
The hotel offers bike rentals for $35/day or $25/half-day.
Sinder Lounge is the main hotel restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The indoor/outdoor space has fire pits and serves California cuisine.
There’s complimentary coffee in the lobby from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.
The lobby bar and Sinder Lounge are both pretty busy and happening after 5 p.m.
There’s also a fun rec room with a ping-pong table, pool table, Jenga, and the occasional liquor tasting.
Though the area seems spread out, it’s very walkable (as long as you don’t mind 10-20 minute walks). If you do mind, hop on the free shuttle or ask the hotel’s car service to drop you anywhere within 3-miles (that includes Venice Beach and Abbott Kinney). Like most areas of LA, there are always Uber and Lyft drivers waiting to pick you up. We wouldn’t recommend renting a car if you plan on staying on the west side (it’s also $37 a night to park). The best part of the hotel is undoubtedly the location. It sits directly across from the Marina with a cavalcade of impressive boats coming in and out all day. It’s also close to Venice Beach and the Venice Canals. The area is safe and walking distance to bars, restaurants, the beach, and more.
There are a lot of chain restaurants in the Marina, but if you want really great food, head over to Abbott Kinney Blvd. Gjelina (6-minute drive) is an ever-popular new American spot with communal dining tables. You can also check out Tasting Kitchen (6-minute drive), a trendy Mediterranean restaurant with inventive dishes.
Similar to restaurants, there are also great bars on Abbott Kinney Blvd. Check out The Otheroom (6-minute drive) for sudsy draft beers and mouthwatering wine. If you want to be near the beach, head to the Venice Whaler (11-minute walk) where they have DJs, live music, and karaoke throughout the week.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The Marina Marriott won’t impress you with innovative style or service, but it will with location and amenities. The restaurant and bar are always a fun hangout and the pool is relaxation incarnate. Rooms have impressive views and you won’t have any noise complaints or temperature issues. While the hotel charges for Wi-Fi, Rewards Members get it for free. If you’re a fan of the Marriott brand, you’ll feel right at home here and be delighted with the easy access to the beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.
