Fodor's Expert Review Loews Hollywood
1755 N. Highland Ave., Los Angeles, California 90028, United States See on Map
Hollywood and Highland has become the epicenter for tourism in Los Angeles, and the hotel towering over the now famous corner is the Loews. One of the biggest properties in LA with 628 guest rooms, the hotel is great for families looking for their favorite stars on the Walk of Fame and young Hollywood bar hoppers looking for amazing nights on the town.
For a VIP experience, ask the hotel for a tour of the rooftop helipad. If you’re lucky, they might escort you up for the best view in all of Hollywood. If you’re feeling really lucky, request a private yoga session up there and find inner peace on top of the world.
room
There are 113 suites and the higher up you go, the better the views. Request a northern-facing room where you’ll be able to see the mansions of the Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood Sign right outside your window. The rooms themselves are decent-sized with a monotone grayish hue that wouldn’t offend anyone. Each room is also equipped with Keurig coffee makers and complimentary coffee.
In-room dining goes from 6 am-11 pm and features both kid-friendly items, as well as dog-friendly items as part of the Loews Loves Pets program. So, great news, if your dog wants a snack, he can get it delivered here.
bathroom
Stylistically, the bathrooms won’t blow you away, but the Julien Farel products are super nice.
lobby
Bustling with activity day and night, the lobby is a center of action for the hotel. H2 Kitchen & Bar sits towards the front doors--and is usually busy. It is a popular place. Easing away from the bar, the lobby furniture is all equipped with outlets for workers to post up with their computers and people-watch.
There’s a Universal Studios booth in the lobby that sells several packages to the theme park. The metro is also on the corner and can take you directly to the park.
pool
The pool is on the 5th floor and is first-come-first-serve for any seating--full service is available. You can also pop out into the Hollywood & Highland mall right off the back entrance, but please put some clothes on first, because you'll no longer be at a pool, but at a mall.
spa
Balance Spa is complete with seven treatment rooms, including couples massage rooms. The spa also includes a full list of services from facials to nails (and more).
gym
The fitness center gives guests incredible front-row views of the bustling Hollywood streets below. The gym is fully equipped with free weights, machines and room for yoga.
dining
There are multiple dining options at the hotel. H2 offers shared plates with a great wine list. Preston’s is the hotel’s main restaurant for breakfast and lunch with contemporary California cuisine. Speck is the pool-side eatery with sandwiches and snack food. And Bodega is the hotel’s grab-n-go spot with Starbuck’s coffee and an assortment of pastries and juices.
LOCATION
Getting Around
Because there’s a metro stop right at the hotel, it’s incredibly easy to see many parts of the city without renting a car or taking a taxi. Additionally, the hotel is in a great walking area with limitless bars, clubs, restaurants and attractions. And the best part, you get to walk along the Hollywood Walk of Fame to get anywhere you need to go. Because of the famous location, you should always mind your surroundings for pickpockets. The area gets incredibly crowded so don’t lose your wallet.
Restaurants
There are plenty of chain options in and around Hollywood & Highland, but for some serious old-school Hollywood flair, check out Musso & Frank Grill (4-minute walk) for perfect steaks since 1919. For another classic spot, head to Yamashiro (6-minute walk if you don’t mind a big hill) just north of the hotel looking over the city from the Hollywood Hills. This classic Japanese mansion was built in the early 1900s and is a great restaurant for Cal-Asian fare and Hollywood history.
WHY WE LIKE IT
As the hub of Hollywood, you can’t find a better situated hotel in the area. While the restaurants won’t blow you away, the bar is always fun and there are countless options right outside the door. For families, there are plenty of great attractions nearby and the metro can take you directly to Universal Studios. This hotel is ideal for tourists, whether they want to experience Hollywood nightlife or take their family on a classic LA vacation.
