When to Go

Peak Season: March to September

Alabama’s climate is mild, but spring is especially nice with azaleas and dogwoods blooming. Summer days average in the 80s, with periods of 90°F—fine beach weather. Summer is the most expensive time to visit. Affordable accommodations at state parks with chalets, cabins, and lodges fill up quickly; book months in advance.

Shoulder Season: October to November

Daytime shore temperatures remain summerlike until November and beach accommodation prices dip. Colorful autumn foliage peaks in the mountains. Remember, college football heats up this time of year. Reserve hotels near stadiums well ahead of your visit.

Off Season: December to February

Alabama winters are mostly mild. Along the coast, sweaters or jackets typically are enough; farther north, however, you'll need a coat. Snow is rare except in the north highlands. Cities stage holiday events, lines are shorter at historic sites, and beaches offer vacation package deals.
