Fodor's Expert Review Auberge Place d'Armes

24 rue St-Anne, Québec City, Québec G1R 3X3, Canada See on Map

Old Québec charm meets modern convenience at this Upper Town inn, comprised of two adjoined historic buildings. Think XVIIth century beams and XVIIIth century brick. Don't worry, they have Wi-Fi and it's free.

YOU SHOULD KNOW There is no elevator, due to heritage considerations, but the staff is quick to lend a hand with luggage.

room

The rooms are all different, but each has ancestral charm. There are exposed beams and brick walls, plus windows with impressive soundproofing. The decor is either Quebec Country with homey duvets and Hudson Bay blankets, or Versailles-style French wardrobes and royal blue upholstery. Rooms have big LCD televisions, iPod docking stations, and large desks.

bathroom

Crisp and clean with black and white tiles, glass shower walls and soaker tubs, the bathrooms are decidedly modern. Witness the colourful "bowl-style" sinks in yellow and black glass.

Some of the bathroom floors are heated, some aren't. Request a room with heated floors when you make your reservation.

lobby

Through the hotel's signature red double doors and up a few steps, the lobby is welcoming and homey. It's economical in size, with an oblong wooden staircase running up to the rooms.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Drop off your bags before finding parking because the public lot is a few minutes away. Some may find the lobby a bit pokey, but the lobby's size doesn't reflect the scale of the rooms.

dining

Brasserie Française Chez Jules replaces the old Le Pain Béni as the in-house restaurant. The menu is authentically French, serving onion soup, tartars, duck, salmon, and more. Enjoy the summertime terrace with big red umbrellas on the sidewalk.

drinking

Chez Jules has a small bar area, plus six signature cocktails on the menu, including La Belle Vie (gin and grapefruit juice) and more.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Auberge Place d’Armes is inside the Old Québec district, an easy walk from all attractions. There is no parking lot on site, but there is valet service in the summer. Otherwise, guests are directed to a public parking lot. Just leave your car there an go everywhere by foot or electric bus.

Restaurants

Bello Restaurant (10-minute walk) is a quaint Italian restaurant and terrace with a panoramic view of Old Quebec City. Their Il Fiammato coffees and desserts are flambéed at the table. Right across the street is Restaurant La Buche, serving traditional Quebecois cuisine. They have a kid's menu with lumberjack-themed colouring book.

Bars

For a rowdy night of live music in a tiny bar not frequented by tourists, go to Bistrot Le Pape Georges (15-minute walk) in Lower Town. Or, go for a few pints of British ale at St. Patrick's (5-minute walk) Irish pub.

WHY WE LIKE IT

With ancestral cred reaching back as far as 1640, this restored inn has an architectural charm with the warmth of a family-run business. It's romantic and quiet, despite being on a busy street in Upper Town. We love that the founder of Hold Renfrew, a luxury store in Canada, once lived here. However, that wouldn't mean much if the inn wasn't comfortable--and it is. Restored in 2010, it's modernized in the ways that matter (i.e. bathroom, soundproofing, Wi-Fi). Pets are welcome and bikes can be loaned or rented.
