Why We Like It

The white porch and bay windows strike a chord. We love the homey charm of the red-brick building and its garden. Every effort is made to personally welcome guests, yet privacy is respected. Owner and host Philippe has a cosmopolitan charm that appeals to everyone. Seriously, Philippe rules. He's great.

They may not like some of his décor choices—bedspreads, paint colors and carpet—but the property is well maintained and runs smoothly. It’s close to Cartier Avenue, but one street removed to ensure a quiet slumber throughout the night.

Fodor's Expert Review

This quiet auberge just off Cartier Avenue has two signature stone lions in the front garden—thus, the name. It became so popular that the owners built a well-considered, modern addition in 2008. Once a grand old home, it now hosts couples and families who want the personal touch in a residential environment.

Tip The owner goes out of his way to help guests sort out their parking.

Room

Paisley power! The 14 unique rooms have different bedspreads—daring enough to forgo the ubiquitous white duvet for prints and patterns. Rooms have various combinations of lovely stone or brick walls, queen or single beds, wooden headboards, contemporary decoration and rugs. The feeling is fresh and unique.

You Should Know Many of the economy rooms are small and there are no king-sized beds on the menu. However, the Superior Room Plus and the suites have plenty of space.

Bathroom

The bathrooms aren’t a stand-out feature. They’re small and often drab, with old-looking toilets. However, they’re squeaky clean, with fluffy towels to compensate. The modern section of the hotel features better bathrooms, often with glass showers and fresh tiles.

You Should Know At least one of the economy rooms on the main floor has a private bathroom, but it’s across the hall. Ask when you book.

Lobby

Guests are greeted so warmly that the lobby doesn’t even register! Rest assured, it’s pleasant, with original wooden bannisters, carpets, a lounge (hello computer!) and a common area with a fridge, microwave, coffee and kettle.

Tip The owner, Philippe, is a big-hearted host with genuine charm. He’s the perfect ambassador for Quebec City.

Getting Around

If you’re driving to Quebec, make that clear when you book the room. There are eight reserved parking spaces, including two small spaces in a heated garage. Those choice spots are suitable for people who plan on leaving their compact-sized car in the lot all day. It’s best to walk in town. There are buses one block away and plenty of taxis.
