Fodor's Expert Review Le Loft Hotel

334 Terrasse St-Denis, Montréal, Québec H2X 1C8, Canada See on Map

Inside an art deco landmark, this chic hotel has loft-like rooms with 10-foot ceilings and lots of space, as well as sleek IKEA kitchens, funky art, and king-size beds.

YOU SHOULD KNOW Be warned that this hotel is also a rockin' party venue. Noise from fellow guests, neighbours and revelers downstairs can be infuriating.

These lofts are huge. They come with wall-sized mirrors, 40-inch LCD TVs, gray walls, leather sectionals, sitting areas, and modern chandeliers. It's an ideal choice for longer stays, attracting film people and touring art troupes.

YOU SHOULD KNOW The hardwood floors are lovely, but missing some area rugs. Bring your slippers!

Spacious and grand, the bathrooms are a selling point. Chic and modern, they have a designer's touch, with rich finishing materials and all the necessities for comfortable grooming.

The lobby—which looks more like an art gallery and martini bar—has a dramatic yellow bench that looks like modern art. Yes, you can sit on it. Because the property is on a hill, the reception is technically on the fourth floor, although it's ground level. Never mind--it's a bit confusing. Although the lobby is bright, with big windows, expect the hallways to strike a more somber tone--they're painted dark gray.

Mingle in the lobby between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. for great conversation (and flirting, probably). Locals arrive and artsies gather for a drink and a chat.

No food is provided.

Getting Around

The location is on a little-known dead-end street in the Quartier Latin, just off rue St. Denis. Many cab drivers may not know this property or the street, so be ready to show them the map on your cell phone. There is self-parking for $20, and the lot isn't spacious. Once parked, leave the car and walk everywhere (downtown, up to the Plateau, down to the Old Port) or take the metro. The nearest metro is a hub station, Berri-UQAM. It's a short walk away.

The famous French bistro L'Express (15-20-minute walk) is a no-brainer for guests who want to eat at an iconic, noisy Montreal establishment. Get the superb steak frites. Or, try La Fabrique (10-minute walk) for beef tartares, terrines, and entertainment via an open kitchen.

Bring your dance shoes to Abreuvoir Bar et Terrace (10-minute walk), a gastropub with a lively outdoor space, big television sets for sporting events, and dance floors. For a more quiet night, there's Randolph Pub Ludique (10-minute walk), where they have board games, card games, beer, and cocktails.

You can spread out in these oversized lofts, with their 10-foot ceilings, hardwood floors, and minimal-chic decor. The living area is perfect for large families or in-room entertaining. However, if your neighbors are also entertaining in their room, the noise in the hotel can mount. Staff and management aren't scarce and not much help against the partying, so bring your ear plugs and sleep masks. We love the location, near the festival zone, downtown, the Plateau, and the Old Port. There's also a metro station practically within eye shot, as well as plenty of bars and cafes. It's great for long-term stays, attracting film crews, dance troupes, and more.
