Fodor's Expert Review Elephant & Castle
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
This affordable eatery doesn't cook or look like a franchise operation, although there are 23 North American locations. You can chalk the former up to the fact that it offers local delicacies, such as steamed mussels and Nova Scotia chowder, along with English-style pub staples. Moreover the heritage building that houses this restaurant is striking inside and out—the ornate 5-meter- (16-foot-) high ceilings are especially lovely. Due to its central location, the Elephant & Castle attracts an eclectic mix of politicos, office workers, and artsy Nova Scotia College of Art and Design students. Sitting mid-hill, it works well for weary tourists, too.
