Getting Here and Around

The only direct way to get to St. John’s is to fly in or arrive by cruise ship. The nearest ferry route from the mainland docks at Argentia, about an hour’s drive from the city. From the airport, it’s a 15-minute taxi ride to downtown. There are no public transit routes or private shuttle buses between the downtown and the airport. Cabs are exclusively operated by City Wide Taxi, with fixed rates to certain hotels, ranging from C$12.50 to C$30 plus C$3 for every extra passenger. For other destinations, fares are metered, with a C$3.50 basic charge.

Metrobus Transit operates more than 20 bus routes (C$2.25 per ride) in St. John's. The transit company also operates a "step-on, step-off" trolley (seasonal) serving downtown, major hotels, and visitor attractions for a flat fee of C$5 per day for individuals or C$20 for a family. You can also purchase a single trolley trip for C$2.25. For rides within the city, taxis carry a flag rate of C$3.50, with increments of C$0.25 for every 0.166 km (0.1 miles) and C$0.25 for each 30 seconds of stop time. Downtown is walkable, but you'll want a car to explore farther afield because public-transit options are few (or none).
