Gander, a busy town of 11,000 people, is notable for its aviation history. During World War II, the airport here, now called Gander International, was a major strategic air base because of its favorable weather and secure location. After the war, the airport became a hub for civilian travel. It gained some renown when planes destined for the United States were diverted here following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The movie Diverted told the heartwarming story. Today the airport is a major air-traffic-control center.
With its varied lodging options, Gander is a good base for travel in this part of the province, including to Twillingate, the town of Change Islands, and Fogo Island.
