Whistler

Whistler has a legendary après-ski scene, and on any given weekend, there may be more nonskiers than skiers filling the local patios, clubs, and saloons. Stag and stagette parties wander the pedestrian-only Village, and people line up early to get inside Buffalo Bills, Moe Joe's, Maxx Fish, or Garfinkel's, where DJs and bands from Vancouver and beyond come to spin.

The night begins with après, when skiers, bikers, and hikers alike unwind on patios such as the one at the Longhorn Saloon & Grill, Garibaldi Lift Company, or Dubh Linn Gate Irish Pub—think happy hour for the hyped up—and the clubs usually stay open until 2 am except for Sunday and holidays. The minimum age is 19 and smoking is only allowed outside, although even some patios are smoke-free zones. When the bars close, the local constables lead a (usually) well-behaved cattle drive through the Village and back to the hotels.

For entertainment listings, pick up Whistler's weekly newsmagazine, the Pique, available at cafés and food stores.

  • 1. Garibaldi Lift Company

At the base of the Whistler gondola, this popular joint attracts a lively crowd to its iconic après-ski bar that also serves lunch, dinner, and an exciting late-night scene. It's a cozy place to chill out and watch the latest ski and snowboard videos during the day; in the evening, though, things get hopping. Friday night house parties are legendary—the music isn't run-of-the-mill Top 40—and in addition to live bands, it's a venue for top DJ talent from Canada and the U.S.
