Fodor's Expert Review Dad Ibe Lodge
Achutupo, Guna Yala, Panama
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
This hotel occupies a tiny island that's hardly bigger than a basketball court: it must have looked like something from a comic book before locals undertook the construction of five thatched bungalows and an open-air restaurant on either end of it. The island is little more than a swath of pale sand shaded by a dozen coconut palms with hammocks strung between them. The bungalows, perched over the sea, are pretty basic, with two queen beds, cane walls, and tiny bathrooms, but they have back porches with hammocks and priceless views. You'll be lulled to sleep by the sound of tiny waves washing beneath the floorboards. It's a great place to do nothing, but you can rent snorkeling equipment and tours to nearby islands and the community of Aligandi are included in the rates; lobster, however, is an extra charge. The guide speaks decent English.
PROS
- great beach
- good guide
CONS
- bungalows quite rustic
