Fodor's Expert Review Teatro Peón Contreras

Mérida Visitor Center

This 1908 Italianate theater was built along the same lines as grand turn-of-the-20th-century European theaters and opera houses. In the early 1980s, the marble staircase, dome, and frescoes were restored. Today, in addition to being a performing arts venue, the theater houses a branch of the Oficina de Turismo (tourist information office) for the state of Yucatán. The theater's most popular attraction, however, is the café-bar spilling out into the street facing Parque de la Madre.
