Fodor's Expert Review Grutas de Loltún

Grutas de Loltún Cave

Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.

The Loltún ("stone flower" in Mayan) is one of the largest, most fascinating cave systems on the Yucatán Peninsula. Long ago, Maya ceremonies were routinely held inside these mysterious caverns, and artifacts unearthed in them date as far back as 800 BC. The topography itself is intriguing: there are stalactites, stalagmites, and limestone formations known by such names as Ear of Corn and Cathedral. Illuminated pathways meander a little over a kilometer (½ mile) through the caves, most of which are quite spacious and well ventilated (claustrophobics needn't worry). Nine different openings allow air and some (but not much) light to filter in. Moisture can make these paths somewhat slippery so be sure to wear shoes that grip.

You can enter only with a guide. They earn a very small salary and survive on tips—be generous.
