Fodor's Expert Review Hacienda Puerta Campeche
Calle 59 No. 71, Campeche City, Campeche, 24000, Mexico
Editor's Note: This property is currently undergoing renovations.
Just across from the Puerta de Tierra, a row of 17th-century mansions that spans nearly an entire block was reconfigured to create this lovely and unusual hotel. While not technically a hacienda, the village-like property—complete with a garden spa, rooftop lounge, and small library—ranks among the most luxurious in Campeche. Many of the original walls and lovely old tile floors have been preserved. An unusual indoor-outdoor swimming pool is surrounded by half-tumbled ruins with hints of original paint, and there are inviting hammocks suspended over the water. On Friday and Saturday, from 7 pm to midnight, enjoy the rooftop bar and sound-and-light show. Even if you don't stay here, the Restaurante La Guardia, which serves well-prepared seafood, is worth a visit.
