Wildlife has understandably been affected by the development of coastal resorts; however, thanks to the federal government's foresight, 1.3 million acres of coastline and jungle have been set aside for protection as the Reserva de la Biósfera Sian Ka'an. Whatever may happen elsewhere along the coast, this pristine wilderness preserve (Mexico’s second-largest after the Reserva de la Biósfera Calakmul) remains a haven both for thousands of species of wildlife and for travelers who seek the Yucatán of old.
