The Viceroy Riviera Maya

Playa Xcalacoco, Fracc. 7, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo 77710, Mexico
Fodor's Choice

Why We Like It

Because it’s small but upscale. Whatever it may lacks in size and grandiosity, it makes up for it in attention to details and intimacy. We love the décor and the authenticity of the Mayan touches. The kind of experience one looks for when getting tired of the impersonal side of the huge resorts.

Fodor's Expert Review

This romantic and secluded hotel formerly known as The Tides Riviera Maya, transpires sensuality at every corner. Its gorgeously chic design blends The Viceroy perfectly into the stunning natural elements that surround it. One of the gems of Playa del Carmen among the adults-only category.

Room

There are 41 villas of seven different categories. Each one of them has plunge pool, private patio and a woven hammock. The décor is exquisite inspired in the Mayan culture and includes wooden floors, palapa roofs, and rattan elements throughout the suite. Each villa is a beautiful piece of design that gets enhanced by the service of your own Butler.

Bathroom

An indoor soaking tub and an outdoor moon shower are what make so unique these zen-like bathrooms. The space is wide and open, the amenities are top-end and they come with double-sink vanity, what else can you ask for?

Lobby

The lobby is under a big palapa, but like everything at The Viceroy it’s not just a palapa, but a gorgeous, stylish palapa. This is just a place where guests go to receive a warm welcome, but it definitely succeeds in communicating the message of what kind of hotel is this.

Pool

That’s right, besides that little plunge pool you have in your villa, there is another pool where you go to socialize and to let the maids clean your suite. The water at this pool seems to be moving in slow motion, just like everything else at The Viceroy. Nice baskets with towels and hats here and there make for a nice touch, but the Butlers standing poolside ready to hand you an iced towel are the real deal.

Spa

Set in what seems to be the middle of the jungle, the Wayak Spa is a circular building with a palapa roof that focuses on Mayan treatments that aim to heal both the body and the spirit.

Gym

There is a small fitness center for circuit and strength training. Oceanfront yoga lessons and personalized pilates are also available.

Dining

The Coral Grill is a beachfront restaurant that offers excellent ‘Al fresco cuisine’ in a casual setting. On the other hand, La Marea serves Mexican dishes with Mediterranean touches in a fancier environment.

Tip To the sit at the Chef’s Table is an exquisite experience which goes beyond the gastronomy side of it. Prepare yourself to be delighted by a seven-course meal inspired by Mayan culture.

Drinking

The Coral Grill doubles-up as the only bar in the premises of the hotel, while La Marea offers a nice wine collection to accompany your dinner. The Tequila and Ceviche Tasting is o good introduction to the culture of tequila as a refined spirit and not just a shot.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is just a 40-minute drive away from the Cancun International Airport, located at the private and quiet surroundings of the growing town of Playa del Carmen. However, being in a secluded place comes with a price: there is almost nothing, apart from strands of white beaches, within a walking distance. Nevertheless, the Concierge is always willing to help you organize your local transportation if needed.

Restaurants

If you want to try some food outside the boundaries of the hotel there are plenty of options that are worth a short drive. Chez Celine (15-minute drive) is a French bakery, beloved by locals, with all types of fresh pastries, quiches, and salads; ideal for breakfast or afternoon tea. Excellent cuisine and personalized service awaits you at Oh Lala! (17-minute drive), an upscale restaurant with only 9 tables on the premises.

Bars

La Ranita (20-minute drive) is a perfect place to have a beer or a few drinks in a more informal atmosphere. The bar is popular with locals and tourists alike and offers cozy, Mexican rustic setting and laid-back atmosphere. If you are in need of something fancier, try Kitxen (18-minute drive) on the corner of 5th avenue and 20th street with spectacular drinks and live music.
