Rosewood Mayakoba

Carretera 307, Km 298, Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo 77710, Mexico

Why We Like It

Because you get to your room in a boat, and because the lagoon adds a dimension that not many resorts in the area enjoy. We love the Spa on an island and the décor of the rooms, which is second to none in the Riviera Maya.

Fodor's Expert Review

Rosewood Mayakoba is one of the four hotels located in the stunningly beautiful Mayakoba gated community, which also includes residences, golf courses, restaurants and even a Mexican village replica. This is luxury in the jungle at its highest level. A top-notch, not inclusive resort, where amazing nature blends with extraordinary design. Did we mention it also offers an excellent kids’ program?

Room

Built as part of a grand-design that prioritizes harmony with the natural environment, without sacrificing luxury, the 129 suites and villas of Rosewood Mayakoba face either a lagoon or the Caribbean Sea. The Island Suite has a private treatment cabin for in-suite Spa treatments, while the presidential suites extend for nearly 4,000 square feet and include stylish wooden decks with private plunge pool. All suites come fully-equipped with the most modern and luxurious amenities possible.

You Should Know Mosquitoes can be a real issue, especially in the terraces of the lagoon suites.

Bathroom

Every bathroom has a different design according to its suite or villa. However, they are all ultra-elegant and try to include open spaces as much as possible. The bathroom of the Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suite for example, opens directly to a small private garden with an outdoor shower. It also includes an indoor shower with floor to ceiling crystal walls and door. Just in front of the shower there is a classic old fashion tub. There are studio flats smaller than these bathrooms.

Lobby

This lobby is a bit of a letdown. Although it is architectonically aesthetic it seems more a kind of drop-off station, than a proper lobby. The thing is that from there, a little boat will take you through the labyrinthic system of rivers and lagoons all the way to your suite.

Pool

There are three swimming pools distributed along the premises of the Rosewood Mayakoba. The infinity beach pool may be one of the most popular, but the Casa del Lago pool is also quite fun. There is also an adults-only pool located on the Spa island, which promises more calm and tranquility. Each pool has their own stylish poolside cabanas and loungers.

Spa

Located in a secluded island and surrounded by the lush vegetation of the tropical forest, Sense is a prime Spa that makes the most of its spectacular surroundings. With 12 treatment rooms and eight island suites, Sense offers a wide array of therapeutic treatments that incorporate Mayan culture, indigenous plants and more traditional services and products. A jewel in the crown of the Rosewood Mayakoba.

Gym

A complimentary fitness center is available to all guests of Rosewood Mayakoba. Relative to the size of the hotel it is small, but well-appointed with cardio, resistance and stretching areas. It offers private training sessions and yoga, pilates and cardio combat lessons.

Dining

There are three restaurants inside the hotel, one serves Italian cuisine with Mexican influences, another celebrates the richness of Mexican cuisine, and the last one has been described as a “sushi and tequila library”, which is intriguing to say the least. Nevertheless, when visiting a hotel of this category you should go for the home run, and that’s none other than the culinary program “A sense of taste”, which takes guests into extraordinary and unforgettable gastronomic experiences.

Drinking

With over a hundred brands of top-shelf tequilas, Agave Azul is the place to go to discover new horizons in the drinking sphere. A nice detail that usually goes unaccounted for, is that every suite welcome guests with a fine mezcal tasting.

Tip In Mexico, tequila and mezcal are refined spirits, not party shots. Make sure to sip them little by little in order to discover their tasteful secrets, and also to avoid getting drunk too early in the day.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Rosewood Mayakoba is only 45 minutes away from Cancun International Airport and a short drive from Playa del Carmen, allowing you to easily enjoy both destinations during your stay. It’s a good idea to use local taxis to explore the area as the hotel is a bit away from almost all the interesting attractions, parks and ruins.

Restaurants

The Mayakoba Resort makes it unnecessary to look for culinary adventures outside its boundaries, but it’s a sin to be in Playa del Carmen and not enjoy its dining scene, and… have you ever had dinner in a cave? No? Well, Alux (20-minute drive), makes it possible, and apart from the incredible setting, their food is bloody good. If you want to combine, foodie and artistic experience, go to Frida Kahlo Restaurant (23-minute drive). They will pamper your sight and taste senses at the same time. Really worth a trip.

Bars

Nothing tastes better in a hot day than a cold beer, and beer-lovers cannot miss Club de la Cerveza (20-minute drive) with all the local and national types of beers waiting for you to be tasted. If you are more into cocktails, Wana’bar (18-minute drive) makes the best ones in town.
