This elegant, adults-only boutique hotel, is located on the famous Fifth Avenue right in the heart of Playa del Carmen. The beach is just one block away, while a huge diversity of shopping and dining options can be easily found just by walking around a little bit. So, location is perfect, but the hotel has refined atmosphere that makes it quite enjoyable.
YOU SHOULD KNOW Lunata is a charming little hotel, but as such it doesn’t have some of the amenities guests have become accustomed to, such as swimming pool, Spa or fitness center.
The traditional Mexican décor of these charming rooms brings out the best elements of the local style, such as hand-painted Talavera tiles, bright contrasting colors, and rustic wood furniture. All rooms enjoy air conditioning, Wi-Fi, balcony or terrace and in-room security box.
You may want to try a room with garden terrace, as these are quieter and most relaxing. The rooms with balconies overlooking the 5th Avenue can get a bit noisy.
These bathrooms are gorgeous, they have a single sink and shower, but it’s the design that makes them so cool. The door, sink and mirror, all come with refined hardwood work. On the other hand, the entrance to the shower is a beautiful stone arch surrounded by Talavera tiles, while inside the shower is all blue deep. This is Mexican design at its best, simple but effective.
Lunata’s lobby is like one of those Mexican houses of old. The clay tile floor, the orange walls and blue sofas, the even more colorful pillows and the artsy handcrafts all over the place and the central garden in the background, create an authentic Mexican environment that sometimes can’t be replicated at the huge all-inclusive resorts.
A nice palapa with rustic wooden tables is where the included Continental breakfast is served every morning. The adjacent garden also offers sitting area and can be a relaxing option to enjoy the morning coffee. There is also a rooftop terrace, but you would need to take your own snack over there as there is no food service in this area.
There is no bar at Lunata, but you are on the Fifth Avenue, all you need to do is walk out of your hotel and you will find dozens of bars and nightclubs to choose from.
Located in the 5th avenue, Lunata finds itself within walking distance of every shop, bar and restaurant of interest in downtown Playa del Carmen. To move away from downtown, taxis and colectivos (mini-buses) are the options. Cancun International Airport is a 50-minute drive away and concierge can arrange a taxi or private transfer service for you.
Puerto Cocina Urbana (15-minute walk) serves gourmet seafood in a hipster atmosphere. Enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner by the beach at Zenzi (3-minute walk) which also offers live music by night. Cenacolo Playa (13-minute walk) offers fine Italian cuisine in a stylish establishment.
In the 5th there are plenty of drinking options and Mandala (4-minute walk) is one of the best nightclubs in town. However, Coco Bongo (5-minute walk) is where the most famous fiesta in Playa lives. Kitxen (8-minute walk) is a Mexican cantina with chic design and live rock at times.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Location, location, location. It’s in the 5th Avenue! Besides, it has an exquisite Mexican design that makes it so quaint and interesting. We love the peaceful feeling of that gorgeous interior garden.
