There has been trouble in certain parts of Michoacán State with drug cartel–related violence; however, this does not affect the average tourist. To err on the side of caution, stay to the more touristed areas within the state and within its capital, Morelia. If you are compelled to head off the beaten path, do so with a reputable tour operator or guide, rather than solo.
