Why We Like It

Space, style, location, and discretion spell the ultimate in luxury for independent travelers.

Fodor's Expert Review

Housed in an 1905 mansion in the heart of fashionable colonia Roma, La Valise's three massive suites give the feeling that a wealthy art-collector friend has loaned you her home. There is no restaurant, bar, gym, pool, spa, or even elevator (it's an century-old building in an earthquake-prone area, after all), but for travelers who prefer space and style over amenities, there may be no better choice in the city.

You Should Know The hotel has very strict cancellation policies due to its small size. Only children over 12 are allowed.

Room

Only three rooms, each about 1000 sq. ft., with no expense spared: Fine art and one-of-a-kind furnishings are curated by the exclusive vintage boutique Chic By Accident. Beds have 600-thread count Egyptian cotton linens.

You Should Know There is no elevator in the house; the 3rd floor room "La Terraza"—with a bed that rolls onto the outdoor terrace!—will be difficult to access for people with health problems or physical challenges.

Bathroom

Walk-in showers with separate tubs. Amenities are from Mexican brand Baja Botanica.

Lobby

There isn't a lobby per se but there is always someone on duty. Access is via fingerprint reader.

Spa

No spa, but the hotel can arrange in-room massages.

Gym

No fitness center but the hotel can arrange (paid) access to a luxury sports club 5 blocks away.

Dining

No on-site restaurant, but room service is available.

Tip Room service is from the nearby restaurant Rosetta, frequently cited as one of the best restaurants in the country.

Drinking

No on-site bar but rooms have minibars.

Getting Around

The best way to get around Mexico City is via Uber or similar ride-share services, like Cabify and the by-women for-women Laúdrive.

Restaurants

The salads and sandwiches at stylish Belmondo (10-minute walk) are made with local ingredients and served on locally handcrafted dishes. Casa Virginia (4-minute walk), from famed chef Monica Patino, serves refined international cuisine on the 2nd floor of a gorgeous old home. Eduardo García's Maximo Bistro Local (6-minute walk) is a longtime local favorite, with menus designed around that day's market visit.

Bars

Unpretentious hipster hangout Félix (8-minute walk) is a great place for mezcals, gintonics, and light bites. Try the traditional drink pulque—fermented agave sap—at Pulquería Los Insurgentes (3-minute walk).
