The abstract red-and-blue mural in the lobby and cantilevered gray facade add a dramatic flourish to this hotel in the historic center. Geared to conventions, everything is oversize here, from the lobby to the five food-and-beverage outlets.
Plush Italian furniture, gray-green carpeting, and Spanish marble are features of the guest rooms, which come in one of four different color schemes: vanilla, gray, wine, or blue. Rooms display old photos of the Centro Histórico.
Housekeeping is available on request 24 hours.
Clean with marble accents but many are in need of upgrading. Toilets are separated by a locking door.
Lobby can be chaotic with patrons of the lobby bar and popular El Cardenal restaurant, but discreet 24-hour security guards keep things moving smoothly and safely.
Spa Alameda is full-service with a wide range of treatments as well as open relaxation areas. The large "Vitality Pool" has several massaging hydrotherapy jets. Separate men's and women's dressing rooms have steam rooms and jacuzzis.
Very large and modern, and open 24 hours.
El Cardenal is a branch of one of the city's most beloved traditional restaurants. Breakfasts are a must.
Try the escamoles at El Cardenal: These ant eggs are mild in flavor and often called "Mexican caviar".
At one corner of Alameda Park, the hotel is located at the junction of the historic Centro and trendy Juárez, with many sights a short walk away. Alameda Park can be shady at night, so take cars after dark.
Churros didn't exist in México until a Spanish émigré founded Churrería El Moro (11-minute walk) in 1935. Bring your camera to Casa de los Azulejos (8-minute walk), which houses a branch of the nondescript Sanborn's chain. It's one of the city's most spectacular buildings, with an entirely tiled facade and murals adorning the interior.
Pulquería Las Duelistas (11-minute walk) has been slinging pulque--fermented agave sap--from this location for over a century. Mundana (2-minute walk) is a hip little mezcalería which would seem more at home in Roma or Condesa, except for the friendly prices.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Great spa, classic restaurant, strategic location, and frequently better rates than neighboring chain hotels.
