Fodor's Expert Review The Hotelito

Rancho de la Cachora, Todos Santos, Baja California Sur 23301, México See on Map Fodor's Choice

Original art is found throughout this modern lodging and has been mixed with contemporary and antique Mexican decorative pieces; the sculptural furniture is as comfortable as it is captivating. Each room has a private patio with lounge chairs and hammocks. A variety of activities can be planned with the assistance of the friendly, accommodating staff. Beds are incredibly comfortable, linens are dreamy, robes are fluffy, and fresh flowers are always present. There is also a three-bedroom home available for rent on the property, which is lush with palms, bougainvillea, and jasmine.

This striking B&B reflects the talents its owner, who is responsible for both the colorful, contemporary architecture and the stylish interior design. Four casitas each showcase hand-picked appointments and accents reflecting a chosen color palette, and all feature breezy terraces with hammocks and other comfortable furnishings. The beds are superb, and in fact were shipped from the U.S. to provide maximum comfort.

In addition to the casitas, three rooms are available in the Hacienda de Chilicote. These rooms are sold as a package, and are perfect for visiting families.

The most distinctive bathroom features are the large, walk-in showers, and the framed photos showcasing vintage Mexican street scenes or historical incidents.

An enormous 48-foot long saltwater swimming pool is the highlight of The Hotelito’s private lounge area, which also includes tables, chairs, chaise lounges, and hammocks.

During the summer months, guests can reach up and grab fresh mangos off a tree while showering off after a dip in the pool.

Breakfast is served daily in a charming, shaded al fresco dining area. A shared kitchen is available for grilling and other food preparation.

An honor bar allows guests to build and keep track of their own cocktails, before settling up at check-out.

Getting Around

The Hotelito is located off a dirt road, overlooking an orchard, just minutes from the heart of Todos Santos. It’s an ideal location--close to downtown shopping and dining, yet far enough away to offer quiet and seclusion--but guests will need a rental car for the short drive into town, as well as for any exploratory jaunts to regional destinations like Los Cabos or La Paz.

Café Santa Fe (3-minutes by car on Calle Centenario) is the benchmark fine dining spot in Todos Santos, an Italian eatery with a gorgeous courtyard that has served as a gathering place for local artists for decades. Michael’s at the Gallery also draws art lovers (it’s located at Michael and Pat Cope’s Galería de Todos Santos, just outside town at Huerta las Palmas Cañada del Diablo), but the main attraction during dinner hours is the terrific Pan-Asian cuisine.

Downtown cocktail locales of note include the rooftop Sky Lounge at Guaycura Boutique Hotel (2-minutes by car on Calle Legaspi), and the Iguana Lounge at La Copa Cocina in Todos Santos Inn (2-minutes by car on Calle Legaspi). Both lodgings inhabit gorgeous brick buildings erected during the town’s 19th-century heyday as a sugarcane capital.

The Hotelito is not only exquisitely designed and appointed, but also offers warm service and downhome touches. Guests are invariably invited to meet the owner’s menagerie, which includes dogs, goats, a sheep, a horse, and a donkey. Such visits are purely optional, however, and the animals are only seen, heard, or smelled by those who choose to visit their distant enclosure.
