Fodor's Expert Review Casa Natalia

An intimate, graceful boutique hotel, Casa Natalia is in the heart of San José's downtown and opens onto the Zócalo. Themed rooms are decorated in regional Mexican motifs and have king-size beds, soft robes, remote-controlled air-conditioning, and private patios screened by bamboo and bougainvillea. Two suites have hot tubs and hammocks on large terraces, and a third suite is available for longer rentals. Running twice per day, a $5 shuttle takes you to a beach club in the Corridor. Natalia's cozy little bar offers hotel guests afternoon happy hour specials, including dos por uno, or two-for-ones. The in-patio restaurant, Mi Cocina, is fabulous. Staffers are helpful and welcoming. This adults-only hotel is the most luxurious option for those who wish to spend time enjoying the culture of this tranquil town. No children under 13.

If traveling on a budget, request one of the Artist Rooms that cost about half price.

Some standard rooms serve as large-scale canvases for local artists; superior rooms and spa suites have individual rather than shared terraces, with hammocks and pool views. All rooms showcase king-sized beds, fresh flowers, exquisite art and handmade Mexican accents, and amenities like cable television and complimentary Wi-Fi.

Breakfasts are delivered daily to all superior rooms and spa suites.

bathroom

Fine cabinet work is a Casa Natalia feature shown to good advantage in the bathrooms, which have plenty of space beneath their lovely granite countertops, and also serve as de facto walk-in closets.

lobby

The lobby is small and mainly given over to concierge and office space, but does feature an art and souvenir boutique.

pool

The courtyard swimming pool is in the shape of a half moon, broadening out beneath a relaxing waterfall. Chaise lounges and umbrellas are set around the pool, and at night stone fire bowls provide dramatic illumination.

spa

Although there is no dedicated spa facility, spa services like massages may be arranged in any of the hotel’s rooms.

dining

Chef and co-owner Loic Tenoux helms the excellent courtyard restaurant,Mi Cocina. The chef describes his restaurant as a “Euro-Mexican Bistro,” and the specialty of la casa is an unlikely yet delicious pairing of chicken and chocolate. Baja Oyster Bar is a more recent, but equally delightful addition.
